First Home Owner Grant (FHOG)

If you’re a first home buyer and buy or build a new home, you may be eligible to receive a $10,000 grant through the First Home Owner Grant (FHOG).

What assistance is available?

The $10,000 is a one-off payment, typically paid once settlement is made or the first building drawdown is required.

Am I eligible?

To receive the FHOG, you must have:

  • Not owned a home, either jointly or separately, before 1 July 2000.
  • Signed your contract on or after 1 July 2013.
  • Bought or built a new home valued at less than $750,000. If you have bought a property, it cannot have been previously used as a place of residence (someone else lived there), it must be new.
  • Lived in your home as your principal place of residence for at least 12 months after settlement or completion of construction.
  • Be at least 18 years of age at settlement or completion of construction, and an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

How can I apply?

Typically, your lender will lodge the application to the State Revenue Office Victoria on your behalf when you have been approved for a home loan.

If you think you are eligible, contact your lender about the application process.

You can apply online yourself, but only if an approved agent is not lodging the application on your behalf. Applications cannot be lodged with the State Revenue Office Victoria until after completion of your property transaction.
